Prof Pramod Garg and Dr. S.M. Jagannath: “……of the 565 patients diagnosed with AP who subsequently developed pancreatic cancer, 419 (74.2%) experienced their initial pancreatitis event within 2 years of the cancer diagnosis, which suggests a misclassification bias at the index presentation but, more importantly, highlights the importance of continued surveillance in such patients with AP of unknown etiology. Patients with unexplained AP, particularly those older than 50 years, or those with CP and a dilated pancreatic duct (often the basis of making the diagnosis of CP) but without calcification, must be investigated thoroughly to rule out the presence of small periampullary tumors, which are not visible on cross-sectional imaging.” (1).
