This sponge is a cell collection device that functions as a non-endoscopic form of screening for Barrett’s esophagus.
A polyester sponge material is compressed within a capsule that measures about 8.5 mm in diameter and 25 mm in length.
The capsule, which is composed of a disposable vegetable gelatin that dissolves in the stomach, is attached to a string.
The sponge is exposed after about 5 minutes and once it’s fully expanded it’s pulled out, “scratching” the esophagus and bringing cells back.
